boom drabble
Jan. 21st, 2016 05:50 pm"Okay. Just-- close your eyes." Walking beside him, Sharon opened doors and guided him up the stairs with a hand on his arm. "They're closed, right? You promise?"
The sigh before his answer told her just how much he was humoring her; but still the, "Yes, Sharon. They're closed. I promise," was affirmation enough. Keeping an eye on him, she finally got him up to their apartment - it'd been slow going, and it's not like the surprise would have been given away by him being able to see his way up, but that's not the point.
"Good. Keep them that way." Grabbing his hand, she moved in front of him so she could watch him blindly move towards the door and she opened it, chewing on her lip. "Okay," she said after a second. The hum of the air conditioner in the window was a counterpoint for the radio she'd left playing in the kitchen, and she could tell that it was a struggle for him to keep his eyes closed. "Just... don't move. OK? I'll know if you look."
It'd been a rough few months; Sharon had finally come to terms with what she was, but that was before she'd started doing things again. Things she didn't plan, things that made her worry about putting other people in danger. That was then-- it'd been hard, figuring out how to fully activate her programming; hard for both of them. Now, though...
Now was the chance for things to get better.
She left him standing in the living room, and she moved quickly back to their bedroom, hoping - well. She was hoping this was the right thing. Finally, she came back and thankfully - at least as far as she knew - he hadn't moved or peeked.
"Okay," she said lowly, and took a deep breath. "Open your eyes."
Cradled in her arms, still apparently half asleep, was a puppy - clearly young, it's brown fur covered in spots. "I just saw him at the shelter and thought he needed a good home, and... Maybe it could be with us?" The question was tentative, but one look at his face-- and she knew. It was the right choice. "Happy belated birthday."
